Cringely Got Windows On Apple Right
By: David Utter 2006-04-05 Oh look, Robert X. Cringely's list of predictions for 2006 made in January noted Apple's Intel-based Macs were close to officially running Windows XP. Now Apple (NASD:AAPL) has introduced Boot Camp. The public beta download became available from Apple today. It will be a feature in the forthcoming Mac OS X 10.5 "Leopard" release, Apple said. “Apple has no desire or plan to sell or support Windows, but many customers have expressed their interest to run Windows on Apple’s superior hardware now that we use Intel processors,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. “We think Boot Camp makes the Mac even more appealing to Windows users considering making the switch.” In January, Cringely predicted something like this would happen: … Apple WILL make some inroads against Microsoft. The new Intel Macs will run Windows XP unofficially, and Apple Support acknowledges that they are only days from running XP officially, too. So Apple finally has a solid argument why Windows-centric companies and homes should consider trying a Mac. The best case, though, says that Apple sells an additional million units, which aren't enough for Steve Jobs, so I see him going into a kind of stealth competition with Microsoft.
Cringely's assertion that Apple would sell a shrink-wrapped version of OS X for Intel-based Macs that could be installed on any Intel hardware has not happened yet. It's more likely Apple CEO Steve Jobs will be in repose in a stylish black iDead coffin on display at 1 Infinite Loop before that happens. However, Cringely is on the way to nailing the Jobs-as-Disney/Pixar/Sony Media CEO prediction he made in June 2005, since the Black Turtlenecked One is now Disney's top individual shareholder with the sale of Pixar to the House of Mouse. --- Tag: Apple Add to | DiggThis | Yahoo!
