CNET Takes Webshots At Facebook
By: David Utter 2006-04-04 Need a .edu address to sign up...check; social calendar and photo sharing, check...; obligatory use of hip phrase like "hook up" on the site's main page, check... All that's left for CNET (NASD:CNET to do is formally launch CollegeLive, a spinoff from the popular photo sharing and download service, Webshots. CNET said in a Reuters report it will offer "tailored sites for more than 4,000 universities to plan and document their semesters' worth of parties and social events." Only users with a dot-edu address can signup for the service. "You will still find all sorts of stuff that's unexpected and provocative," said Martin Green, senior vice president at CNET, in reference to what may show up on CollegeLive. "We're all saying it's all fun and games until someone wants to run for office." CNET continued to trade near its open of $14.20, pricing at $14.22 at press time. Recently, CNET purchased privately held Chowhound.com, a nine-year old restaurant review site called "the anti-Zagat's, for people who like food a little spicier" by Matt Groening in the LA Times. "They have no interest in dumbing down anything, believing - correctly, I think - that with some much-needed improvements, Chowhound could continue to grow while maintaining its values and pleasing its loyal users," Chowhound's "Alpha Hound" Jim Leff said of CNET's purchase of the website. --- Tags: CNET, Chowhound Add to | DiggThis | Yahoo!
