GBuy Prepares To Cash In
By: David Utter 2006-06-27 Google's much-rumored payment system has moved closer to a debut, after months of speculation about the service and its potential impact on eBay's PayPal service. The tech world has been joyously awaiting the launch of another Google (GOOG) product. The GBuy payment service should be available in a beta version possibly starting this week, the Wall Street Journal reported.
Sources who have been trickling out the information about the program noted the presence of a rebate component. That component could be a mail-in rebate, an odd choice for a high-tech company like Google, which certainly has the capability to track electronic requests for rebates and tag duplicate requests or any that violate its terms of service. The Journal said GBuy will show up in the contextual advertising present in Google search results. If an advertiser accepts GBuy payments, the visitor from the search ad will go through the GBuy checkout process when making a purchase. We also expect to see GBuy implemented in a couple of places on Google: at its Froogle shopping site and as an option for payment for items listed in Google Base. Base in particular had been billed as an eBay (EBAY) killer when it launched; a payment service makes that competitive scenario more likely. The report noted how Google's merchant charge of a 2.2 percent commission plus 30 cents per transaction will be higher than PayPal's best rate of 1.9 percent plus 30 cents. However, Google will offer discounts to AdWords clients, sources say. Potentially, those clients could see their GBuy costs eliminated. ZDNet's Google blogger Garett Rogers has been prodding at GBuy, or Google Checkout, for some time. He cited a lack for international support initially as disappointing, based on the terms of service, but allowed that could change with the official launch. --- Tags: GOOG, EBAY Add to Del.icio.us | Digg | Yahoo!
