Oracle Goes Back To School

The higher education market has called upon Oracle for the technology needs of faculty and students on campuses in and outside the US.

Oracle Goes Back to SchoolOracle (ORCL) has made progress with about three dozen higher education institutions in recent months. The database and application company released a statement today announcing gains in a few ways from these moves.

Applications aimed at faculty and staff represent license seats that would likely renew on a regular basis. At a sizable institution like the University of Wisconsin-Madison, this represented 1,600 staff working with a newly upgraded PeopleSoft Campus Solution that in turn serves about 40,000 students.

Similar solutions have been upgraded at other institutions around the United States and abroad. Gaining and strengthening its hold in the higher education sector should be a strength for Oracle in its long term planning.

Another of Oracle's higher education wins occupies space near Microsoft (MSFT) chairman Bill Gates' commute to work. Oracle picked up the opportunity to make inroads at City University in Bellevue, WA. That's only a short distance from Gates' Medina mansion and a few miles from Microsoft headquarters in Redmond.

From the statement: "City University...recently replaced disparate information technology (IT) systems with an integrated Oracle infrastructure built to enable rapid access to accurate student, human resources and financial data. The new system -- implemented without customization and deployed in six months -- also helped eliminate duplication of IT resources to reduce total cost of ownership."

Oracle also improved its standing in the government sector. They announced a variety of major cities throughout the US are licensing, upgrading, or implementing Oracle solutions. One win is in San Jose, at the heart of Silicon Valley. Another city is Lexington, KY, home of Internet Financial News and WebProNews.

"With over 1,400 public sector customers worldwide, Oracle is clearly leading the charge to help agencies efficiently manage their business operations," said Oracle Public Sector Senior Vice President Mark Johnson.
