Using content from the Shanghai Media Group, AOL will broadcast various shows on its Chinese-language portal to serve news, entertainment, business, and social interests.

AOL Spreading China News OnlineTime Warner's AOL (TWX) launched a Chinese-language website at chinese.aol.com in mid-February, and announced how it would make videos and versions of AOL and AIM Mail, and AOL Search, available in simplified and traditional Chinese.

The company has followed up that news with the disclosure that Shanghai Media Group, via US-based MediaZone, will provide three hours of daily video content to the AOL Chinese-language site. They will focus on current events and issues of interest to its Chinese audience.

"By creating this free, language-specific portal, we can better serve the millions of people in the United States who want access to critical features and communications tools, especially the latest news and entertainment video, in Chinese," Norman Koo, an AOL Web-strategy executive, said in a statement.

In other portal news, Yahoo (YHOO) will announce its financials Tuesday after market close. Shares of Yahoo closed down 16 cents to 30.97 a share. Analysts expect earnings of 11 cents per share on revenue of $1.08 billion.

Yahoo submitted a filing with the SEC detailing how some executives exercised stock options in 2005. CEO Terry Semel came away with realized profits of $173.6 million, while three other C-level execs realized a combined $120 million themselves.

The company also announced a pair of personnel moves, with Ash Patel giving up the senior vice president of platform engineering position in favor of the chief product officer job. Also Dr. Qi Lu joined Yahoo as senior vice president of engineering for search and search marketing.

"In his new role, Lu will lead development efforts around Yahoo!'s Web search and monetization platforms," Yahoo said.

Google (GOOG) reveals its financials after market close on Thursday, April 20th. Its share price stayed above $400, closing up 4.66 to 406.82. Analysts see revenue of $1.47 billion and earnings of $1.97 per share from the search advertising company.

They recently unveiled Google Calendar, an online calendar service that can be shared with other people by its users. Reviews of the service have been generally positive, and it would not be surprising to see Google work the Calendar into its Gmail for Domains, a managed email service it offers educational institutions and business firms.

Microsoft (MSFT) probably isn't real worried about Google Calendar being a threat to its millions of Outlook and Exchange users who use the calendaring services available with those products.

On its Windows Live platform, Microsoft launched an Academic Search service to compete with Google Scholar. Initially, the service has availability in seven countries and primarily covers three areas - computer science, physics, and electrical engineering.

Microsoft's Bill Gates will play host to a very prominent guest: Chinese President Hu Jintao, who will visit Microsoft's headquarters along with Boeing's before continuing to the White House. To symbolize the greater cooperation between the US and China on piracy issues, Microsoft and Lenovo held a public signing of their agreement to jointly promote the use of licensed software products in China.

While Microsoft will make investors wait until April 27th to discover if its reorganization has had any meaningful impact on the bottom line, eBay (EBAY) announces its earnings on Wednesday, April 19th, after market close. Analysts see 24 cents per share on revenue of $1.39 billion for eBay.

The company's PayPal payment processing unit has made news in a couple of different ways in the quarter. They launched PayPal Mobile, a service that allows users to make purchases via PayPal from participating merchants. The Bravo cable channel was one of the first to sign up to take part in the program.

The Internal Revenue Service received permission from a federal judge to request information from PayPal about customers who may be using the service to evade income taxes. Last October, the IRS made its first request of the court to seek those records.
