Google Earth Gets Video, Not Google Video
By: David Utter 2006-04-07 Discovery Communications will provide streaming video to users of Google Earth for popular destinations, historic sites and natural wonders. Google (GOOG) has inked a deal with Discovery Communications (DISCA), the Liberty Media (L) subsidiary best known for its Discovery Channel.
Discovery provided more details in a statement: Video content for 10 destinations available beginning today: Glacier National Park; Yellowstone; The Everglades; Point Reyes National Seashore; Mt. Rushmore; Alaska National Parks; Arches and Canyonlands National Parks; Santa Monica Mountains National Park; Carlsbad Caverns; and Dinosaur National Park.
By clicking on Discovery's globe icon shown at destination sites at which Discovery video content is available, Google Earth users will launch an interactive broadband player hosted by Discovery that will enable them to select from several two- to four-minute compelling videos from Discovery's rich archive at each target destination. They plan to add video for about 50 additional locations in the coming months. "Discovery's video content complements the immersive experience of Google Earth and aligns well with our company mission to deliver the world's information directly to users," said John Hanke, director, Google Maps/Local/Earth, Google Inc. Earlier this week, Reuters revealed it had obtained an internal memo from Clear Channel (CCU) showing the radio giant had made a deal with Google to use its search boxes on Clear Channel radio station websites. That has taken place, and a search on a Clear Channel site returns results powered by Google, along with Google sponsored search advertising. Microsoft (MSFT) experienced an odd outage of its MSN Search this week. The site became unavailable for a four-hour period on April 6th before returning to service. In March, Microsoft announced an extensive reorganization of its corporate structure. Among the goals listed by the company was the plan to integrate MSN assets with its newest web service-oriented architecture creation, Windows Live. Yahoo (YHOO) has again been tagged with being associated with spyware companies. Researcher Ben Edelman followed up an August 2005 project where he researched the connections between spyware vendors and how they profit at the expense of Yahoo's search advertising clients. His latest research now shows dozens of examples of Yahoo ads being shown within spyware. Edelman calls it "syndication fraud" and provided evidence that the spyware involved was processing fake clicks, where it and Yahoo make money from an advertiser's budget. Time Warner's (TWX) AOL recently dropped its America Online name in favor of the three letters most people have known it by for years. Richard Parsons, CEO of Time Warner, received an overture from the Bush Administration to take the Secretary of Treasury job but declined, CNN said. His Time Magazine unit cut 250 jobs today as part of a shift in the focus of the business. "This is not just about cost-cutting. We are reallocating our assets as we continue to evolve from a magazine publisher to a multi-platform media company," a Time Warner spokesperson said in a Dow Jones report on the layoffs, which brought the total job cuts to 450 since December 2005. IAC /InterActiveCorp (IACI) president of programming Michael Jackson told The Guardian his firm would like to find the next Gawker or HuffingtonPost for his company. He said the desires of the online public have not changed much over the past 70-odd years, and he wants to find Internet-based content suited to that: "The fundamental needs of what people are looking for are the same. American Idol is a 1930s radio talent show with some new features, like the meanness of the judges and the audience voting," he said. "That's what I am doing now. It's about doing the things I already know about, such as narrative and storytelling, and adding to it those functionalities and tools that enable users to get to what they want with remarkable speed and precision."
