Small Donation Garners Big Press For Google
By: Nathan Weinberg 2006-11-06 SEO Black Hat is right: Google did get a ridiculous amount of press for donating $30,000 to Creative Commons. Link: SEO Black Hat is right It was a nice gesture that pales in comparison to those of its big "evil" competition. Google's 30 grand was mostly a gesture, a vote of confidence in CC, which aims to expand the amount of available creative works. While CC could use the money, Google isn't exactly hurting from the donation, which came out of $800,000,000 in profits (just from the last quarter). Good for Google, but Compare that paltry donation to what Microsoft did in October. Microsoft had a giving campaign during last month, October, where it matched employee donations, and in one month they raised $63 million dollars. That's what a one month campaign resulted in. 58% of the employees at MS contributed and MS added $1 for each $1 the employees gave.
Try to remember that for all its faults, Microsoft and founder Bill Gates make up what may be the most charitable organization in the history of the world. CC is real popular with the geeks, but AIDS is getting "popular" in Africa, and is a bit more important of a cause. SEO Black Hat says that if Google's $30,000 is bigger news than Microsoft's $63 million (and it has been), that means Google's marketing is 2100 times more effective than Microsoft. About right. And Microsoft's charity is 2100 times bigger than Google's. Charity isn't about press, but results, and I don't think Google's donation is working towards curing anyone's deficient immune system. I like Creative Commons, but no one can deny that Microsoft makes a difference, one that gets often overlooked.
