Google Monetizing Email

Google is testing out email advertising for trusted publishers, allowing them to place contextual targeted advertising in email newsletters and mass emailings.

Check out the screenshot and discussion at the Digital Point forums. This brings an excellent question: Is the best way to fight spam by giving it a legitimate way to make money? If you think about it, if Google is doing email advertising, there could be a lot of money there. However, if you send out spam, your accoung is likely to get kicked, which would be a huge deterrent to spam.

There are plenty of legitimate ways to handle email marketings, enough that spammers could stick to the legitimate means to hang onto their AdSense earnings. Unlike Blogger, where Google has been losing the battle with the spammers, and regular AdSense, where there just aren't widely used reporting tools, Google already has a great way of detecting email spam: Gmail. If an email containing a Google ad winds up reported as spam by enough Gmail users, Google will kick the advertiser out, creating hopefully enough fear to keep advertisers honest.

It's all an interesting idea. When I finally redesign this damn blog, I'll be making it easy for people to subscribe via email, and I'll have to see if my AdSense rep lets me in. On that note, have you seen Engadget's redesign? I'm so ripping that off.
