 Samsung To Unveil First Hybrid Hard Drive 
By: Nathan Weinberg 2006-05-08 Samsung has announced that it will unveil next month the first hybrid hard drive, the first built to take advantage... ...of Microsoft's new Windows ReadyDrive feature. The Hybrid HD will use both a traditional spinning hard drive platter, as well as solid state flash memory, in order to reduce boot times and energy consumption. Ready Drive will try to be smart about when you use the platter and when you use flash, so that the computer is loading straight from Flash, making for something closer to the instant-on nirvana we've been hoping for for years Meanwhile, laptops will try to use the flash memory almost exclusively, loading stuff off the regular hard drive into flash, and shutting down the hard drive, scoring some nice points for the battery. The best use of the flash memory will be when Windows hibernates. If you are lucky enough to have a hybrid hard drive (and to have paid extra for it, no doubt), then Windows will save the hibernation data to the flash drive, not the hard drive. That means it writes faster, and when you press the button to turn back on the computer, it basically should just spring back to life, instantly. Hopefully, Samsung will put in plenty of low-cost flash memory in the HHDs. I don't see any reason that even the lower-capacity laptop hard drives can't simply be offered with the option for 1-2 gigs of flash memory, at about double the regular price. While many users won't be willing to pay extra for it, Media Center and portable users will likely buy a lot of HHDs, making the new storage devices a success.
