MS Gives $1m To Center For Women And IT

Microsoft gave a million dollars to the National Center for Women and Information Technology, as well as a four-year commitment to the Center.

They announced this at the Future Potential in IT seminar, as both the seminar and the money are designed to encourage more young people to enter IT fields.

According to the press release, the popularity of Computer Science as a major for incoming college students has fallen 60% between 2000-2004, even while demand and salaries have slightly increased. Meanwhile, less than 20% of students in CS, engineering and other technical fields are women. Microsoft both wants stronger recruiting classes for them to hire from, and a stronger computer industry as a whole, for them to profit from, and neither is such a bad thing for the people involved.
