Google To Sue JewTube

JewTube, a Jewish-themed video sharing site, will soon be the target of a legal challenge from Google, which isnt happy with the way...

...the sites name clearly plays off YouTube. Featuring videos like The JAP Show, 10 Days of Repentance and Hip-Hop Hannukah, as well as clearly YouTube-influenced logo, JewTubes chances in court are probably not good.

Since the site isnt a parody of YouTube, and the name is one phonetic step away from YouTube, it probably isnt protected. The bigger question will be if Google can later mount legal challenges agains sites like PornoTube. Can Google claim a monopoly on video sites with the -Tube name? Considering that there are no popular competitors with that sort of name, they might actually be able to pull it off in court. Well see.

UPDATE: Avrohom Eliezer Friedman helps out in the comments, pointing to Jewlicious which has the whole story. Basically, NetParty.com, not JewTube.com, is the party involved in the dispute with Google, but it isnt a serious matter. NetParty put up a video of a party they organize, putting the video on a site jokingly called JewTube.

Since multiple websites are using and claiming the JewTube name, NetParty decided to protect themselves by filing a trademark application. Their reasoning was that if Google objected to any use of the term, itd sue those who try to use JewTube in an obviously infringing way, but if Google didnt do anything, those people might sue NetParty, so they decided to protect themselves.

Google doesnt seem to object to anyone using the name JewTube, it just objects to anyone trying to trademark it. So, when NetParty filed for a trademark, Googles lawyers asked them to withdraw it, and they did. If anyone else tries to trademark JewTube, expect Google to get in their face, too, but no ones getting sued in this case.
