Google Still Likely To Bid On 700 MHz Spectrum

Google CEO Eric Schmidt says that the company will probably still bid on the 700 MHz spectrum being vacated by the TV stations...

...even though the FCC did not listen to all of its pleas for required open networks. Google won the right for consumers to attach any device and any application to a 22 MHz slice of the band, but lost on its wholesale condition, which would require the winner to resell bandwidth to other businesses.

Google had said that if the FCC made all of its open conditions a requirement, it would bid at least $4.6 billion in the auction, but the FCC called its bluff, apparently successfully, since Google still plans to participate. The auction will be held January 18.
